In tonight's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leaf defender Morgan Rielly appeared to use a homophobic insult to the referee.
The ice level microphone has grabbed the byte of the sound and it is clear that someone called the referee binding. What makes Rielly likely is that on the video you can see Rielly at the bottom of the clip, watch the referee while the text was being said and was the player closest to that referee.

Rielly has already struggled to say offensive things. In 2015, Rielly is "apologetic" for making a misogynistic remark. I put "excused" in quotation marks because it was one of those excuses "I'm sorry if you were offended" and I also said "I know I can not get it." use with the media "as if it was to say that it's going to say misogyny things as long as it's done privately and that the media are the real assholes who made a bigger contract than he should have done being.
For those who want or expect a long suspension imposed by the NHL, do not hold your breath. For example, Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf acted similarly to a referee in the Western Conference finals in 2017 and was fined $ 10,000.
UPDATE: After the game, the Maple Leafs issued a statement in which they said they were aware of the insulting words and that they "cooperated fully" with the NHL on this.
