The storm finally started moving away from the Bahamas on Tuesday after spending several days pounding the country. The composite animation below shows the movement of the storm since Thursday and is based on satellite images.
A hurricane warning has been extended about 180 miles off the coast of Florida. The storm should also approach South Carolina and Georgia as a major hurricane. In North Carolina, state officials warned that heavy rains could cause dangerous floods starting Wednesday night.

On Saturday, as the predicted trajectory of the storm had changed, the governor of South Carolina also declared the state of emergency, followed by similar statements for North Carolina and parts of Georgia. With the lack of clarity at the scene of the storm, Florida residents wondered if they should stay or evacuate.
