Marc Gasol says Pau ‘would love’ to return to Lakers next season

Pau Gasol has not adapted for an NBA team since March 10, 2019, when he suffered an ankle injury that was later discovered as a navicular stress fracture in his left foot. Gasol had hoped to return to the field last season but his recovery has been much slower than either he or the Portland Trail Blazers expected and he was dropped just a month into the season.

It’s unclear if Gasol is healthy enough to play now, but that hasn’t stopped Lakers fans from trying to bring him back to Los Angeles, where he won two championships alongside Kobe Bryant. The fanfare around Gasol started when he became a free agent last season, but has grown stronger since his brother Marc signed a two-year contract with the Lakers on Tuesday.

Sadly, Marc did not hear any last minute news regarding this prospect during his interview with Allie Cliffton of Spectrum SportsNet Wednesday, but he said Pau would almost certainly host a reunion with the Lakers if the opportunity presented itself:

“I’m not a social media guy, but I know Pau loves Los Angeles and loves the Lakers. Obviously he feels like this is his home so I’m sure he would love to come back, but that’s a question for Rob and the property.

But, to be fair, even Marc’s comments are hardly relevant. In May, Gasol said to himself that the idea of playing back for the Lakers for a final season in the NBA “appealed to him”. Most recently, the tall 40-year-old liked a tweet about his retirement with the Lakers next season.

So the interest is clearly there on the side of Pau. Now we’ll have to wait and see if the Lakers show any real interest as more free agents leave the board. I mean, they’re looking for another great man, aren’t they?
