Margaret Mitchell, co-head of Google’s artificial intelligence team, says the company fired her following an investigation into her use of corporate email.
Why is this important: Google was already criticized for its ouster of Timnit Gebru, the other co-leader of the team. Mitchell has been banned from the corporate email since last month after what a source said was his efforts to search corporate correspondence for evidence to support Gebru’s allegation of discrimination and harassment.
The move comes the same day Google announced internally that it had completed its investigation into Gebru’s exit, as Axios first reported. The company has not released the results of that survey, but has announced a series of policy changes, including tying the company’s executive compensation to diversity and inclusion efforts.
Between the lines: Mitchell too posted a tweet criticism of Google’s management of Gebru and of a subsequent meeting between CEO Sundar Pichai and historically black college and university leaders.
