Well, it was embarrassing!
Chat about Mariah Carey’s Christmas classic On CNN’s New Years Eve show, host Andy Cohen asked the singer, “When you recorded ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’, did you feel it was going to last so long? ? Because it’s one of those songs that you listen to and it always sounds like a brand new song.
“Thank you,” the Grammy winner replied, “but above all, I always hate to say this, but as a writer I wrote this song.”
Cohen quickly added, “I know,” but it was too little, too late, for the diva.
“Yeah, but you said, ‘taped it’ so I just had to clarify it for the people back home,” replied Carey, 50. (Songwriting partner Carey and Walter Afanasieff co-wrote the tune, supposedly in just 15 minutes.)
Adding just one more touch to the exchange, Carey then asked what the noise was in the background, forcing Cohen to respond that this was Jennifer Lopez’s performance for the evening.
Carey, whose supposed feud with Lopez dates back to his feeling that Lopez had copied his “Loverboy” with “I’m Real,” kept a fixed smile on her face.
The situation was approached obliquely in Carey’s recent memoir, which described “an artist. [Sony’s] label (which I don’t know) ”, an aside which itself refers to her famous“ I don’t know her ”interview answer to a question about Lopez.
