A Trump spokesman declined to comment or expand on the former president’s appeal with the Georgia Republican. Greene’s House office spokesperson Nick Dyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Greene’s assertion of Trump’s approval comes as the Republican Party faces pressure to punish the first-year lawmaker for her adoption of conspiracy theories and her history of extremist and racist rhetoric. It catches the GOP at a difficult time, with its uncertain trajectory as party leaders consider Trump’s legacy and their newfound lack of power in Washington.
Trump previously called Greene, 46, a “future Republican star.” Many other Republicans have condemned Greene’s comments, but GOP leaders in the House welcomed her into their ranks when she entered Congress and have so far refused to discipline her.
Greene became an instant lightning rod during his first few weeks in office. She enthusiastically backed Trump’s false claims about a stolen election and promoted the “Stop the Steal” rallies that preceded the storming of the Capitol building on January 6.
House Democrats have called for Greene to be kicked out of Congress. Thursday, President Nancy Pelosi lambasted the Republican leadership of the House for allowing him to sit on the House Education Committee, citing his remarks on the Sandy Hook massacre. “What could they be thinking?” Pelosi said. “Or think of a word too generous for what they could do?”
Greene embraced QAnon and far-right conspiracy theories, including the idea that Jewish-controlled space lasers were responsible for the recent wildfires. POLITICO unearthed a plethora of racist videos she did last summer. Twitter kept her from tweeting for 12 hours earlier this month, after baselessly claiming that Georgia’s Nov. 3 election was “stolen” in a tweet restricted by Twitter “due to risk of violence.”
Mitt Romney of Utah, the only Republican senator to vote to condemn Trump last year, joined the pair on Twitter on Saturday.
“Lies from a feather come together: Marjorie Taylor Greene’s nonsense and the ‘big lie’ of a stolen election,” Romney wrote.
Parliamentary Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) Said he will speak with Greene next week, but it is not known if it will face any repercussions. There is a recent precedent: McCarthy kicked the ex-Rep. Steve King left the committees after the two met and King did not show enough remorse to defend white nationalism.
So far, Greene has shown no signs of distortion and has used the controversy to send fundraising appeals to his supporters.
“I will never back down. I’ll never give up. Because I am one of you. And I will always represent you, ”Greene wrote in a statement Friday afternoon.
Trump and McCarthy met Thursday in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, posting a photo of the two posing at the station. Trump and McCarthy discussed a strategy to help Republicans reclaim the House in 2022, according to a reading of Trump’s leadership call from Save America PAC.
Their relationship appeared to take a turn after McCarthy said Trump was partly responsible for the January 6 riots on Capitol Hill. But McCarthy later backed down and said he didn’t incite the rioters.
