Green Bay Packers team president Mark Murphy has missed the opportunity to provide clarification on Aaron Rodgers’ contract status, an ongoing mystery that dominates the start of the league’s new year.
Murphy was repeatedly asked about the contract on Tuesday, but each time declined to provide details, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.
Murphy said the Packers were able to “create room with others,” noting contract restructures completed with six other veteran players to free up space earlier this month.
No veteran contract has provided a greater opportunity to clear ceiling space than the Rodgers deal, but the Packers haven’t touched it, perhaps by design.
Rodgers still has three years on his contract, but the Packers have clear ways to exit the contract and clear a significant amount of ceiling space as early as 2022, creating a sticky situation for next season, especially with Jordan Love – the team’s first-round pick in 2020 – on hold behind the scenes.
Rodgers was the NFL MVP last season, and an extension – or even some sort of simple restructuring – could help ensure he doesn’t launch into next year with the immediate threat of being replaced in 2022.
Murphy and the Packers might not want to let go of the hand, although revealing work on a possible extension would help clarify the mystery and establish the team’s long-term plan at the quarterback.
The Packers likely chose between two options: closing the deal year after year with all options open, or making a long-term commitment to Rodgers with an extension, which would take time.
