Mark Sanford: The Former Governor of South Carolina Will Challenge Trump During Republican Primary

Mark Sanford, former governor and congressman, will run against Donald Trump in Republican primaries.

"I'm here to tell you now that I'm going in," Sanford said in an interview Fox News Sunday. He said that he would launch an official campaign this week.

"I think we need to have a conversation about what it means to be Republican," said Sanford. "I think that as a Republican party we have gone astray."

Mr. Sanford has been sharply critical of Trump since the 2016 presidential election. He was formerly governor of South Carolina, where he lost his seat at the convention in the mid-term elections of 2018.

Following this loss, he wrote an editorial for The New York Times urging his party to "step back from President Trump's policy".

He joins former Congressman Joe Walsh and former Governor Bill Weld as long-term main candidates running against the president.

Trump's approval ratings among Republicans are still high and his party nomination is unlikely to challenge his candidacy. Nevertheless, critics within the party have been consistent, if ultimately ineffective.
