Police say that they have only begun to suspect that Figueroa was linked to the disappearance of Ochoa-Lopez on May 7, after a friend of Ochoa-Lopez told investigators that Figueroa and the teenager had been in contact with each other on Facebook.

The police then organized a DNA test. Once the test showed that the baby was not from Figueroa, the investigators searched Figueroa's home on May 14 and found the remains of the teenager in a trash can in a backyard, the police said.

Figueroa and her daughter, Desiree Figueroa, who, according to police, contributed to the strangulation, were charged with first degree murder and a child's battery last week.
