A day after the Colorado Rockies determined that a fan had not used a racial insult against Lewis Brinson in Sunday’s game, the Miami Marlins outfielder said he heard differently.
The Rockies fan was trying to get the attention of team mascot “Dinger” but was accused of using the N word during Brinson’s attack. Video later surfaced of him sitting behind the plate and waving and shouting for the mascot to come near him.

Brinson, who is Black, said he didn’t hear the fan screaming during the match, but after listening to the video he said he continued to “hear the N word”.
Brinson has also asked the Rockies to remove the mascot name because “it looks a bit like” the N word, but the team have no plans to make any changes.
“So I watched the video at least 50 times in the last 15 to 16 hours,” Brinson said on a Zoom call ahead of Monday night’s game against the San Diego Padres. “I watched him a lot, especially when I heard he said Dinger instead of the N word.”
Brinson continued, “Personally – this is still my personal opinion – personally I keep hearing the N word. It’s not that I want to hear it, I never want to hear it. Personally, I don’t. I’ve never been called that in person for my face on the baseball field, off the baseball field, ever, so I don’t know what my reaction would be if I was called that.

“But so far, repeating this, I haven’t spoken personally to the Rockies or to this fan. If so, then I’m sorry for any backlash or whatever he’s getting right now.” , he added.
On Monday, the Rockies announced the unidentified fan was screaming for the team’s mascot.
After a thorough investigation that included calls, emails, and video clips from concerned fans, media and broadcast partners, the Colorado Rockies concluded that the fan was indeed screaming for the Rockies mascot Dinger in the hoping to get his attention for a photo, and there was never any racial insults taken place, ”the team said in a statement.
“The Rockies remain committed to providing an inclusive environment for all fans, players and guests at Coors Field,” the team added, “and any fan using derogatory language of any kind will be expelled from Coors Field.”

Steve Staeger of 9NEWS in Denver said he spoke to the fan, who did not want his identity revealed. The man told Staeger he was at the game with his wife and grandchildren, and he wanted everyone to take a picture with the Rocky Mountain mascot.
Staeger says the man was “devastated” that people misheard him. The man wouldn’t have heard of anything until his daughter called him today because the Rockies called her about the incident.
