Thor and Hulk look more fun than others.

Square Enix has introduced the Marvel Avengers on its E3 2019 scene, but the images only give a brief overview of the actual gameplay. IGN attended an extensive game demo behind the closed doors where we had a much better look thanks to 25 minutes of really honest play with Marvel's Avengers.

The demo started in the same way as the E3 sequence: with an attack on the Golden Gate Bridge during the celebration of the day. Although we were not told if it was the opening of the game, we can assume that it is the beginning or at least early. It was very much like a tutorial, because we spent a little time controlling each hero. The game automatically went from one Avenger to another depending on the events of the story. Here's a description of what it's like to play like every Avenger.

Thor Gameplay in Marvel Avengers

You first take control of Thor by landing on the bridge to start fighting the gunmen. His fighting style is reminiscent of God of War's Kratos on PS4: Thor can hit his enemies with Mjolnir, throw the hammer to fend off enemies, engage in melee combat, and then summon the hammer halfway to battle. keep it. bringing pain and lightning.

A brief pause in action gives Thor time to rescue a civilian stuck under a bus and, as he lifts the vehicle, he says something: "Do not be afraid, because I am powerful."

At one point, protected enemies arrive and Thor triggers a great blow in the form of a powerful shock wave to topple them. The icing on the cake comes when Thor launches – as at Ragnarok – and ravages his enemies as the lightning crosses his body and strikes from the sky.

Thor looks like a real power plant with a wide range of capabilities that satisfactorily use Mjolnir and his immense strength.

(It should be noted that it has not been shown if this version of Thor could fly or not.)

Iron Man game in Marvel Avengers

Iron Man, on the other hand, can fly. At least, somehow.

The game has gone to Iron Man and you are immediately on track to chase enemies with jetpack in the air. This is not the most exciting way to take control of the Avenger.

Iron Man then lands to engage in hand-to-hand combat on the ground by lashing around with punches and kicks. It takes off in the hovering air as it fires thrusters of repeller on a shooter who has settled on the top of a bus, then stays in flight to eliminate the last enemies on the ground. His great theatrical makes take off a big beam one of his chest.

While all the bells and whistles, as well as lasers and rockets were there, the Iron Man game seemed to be the smallest of the pack.

Hulk Gameplay in Marvel Avengers

At this point, huge sound guns emerge from enemy trucks and blow up Iron Man from the sky. To deal with the heavy firepower, Bruce Banner jumps from a jet plane and lands under the name of Hulk. Hulk's gameplay was less focused on combos than on brutal destruction of enemies as if they were just action figures. He can even pick up enemies and use them as melee weapons or simply throw them as a projectile.

The Hulk movement, on the other hand, is all about momentum. As the bridge begins to collapse, Hulk is forced to jump from one impromptu platform to another, from time to time running against the wall to gain speed and run further into the tunes, leading to the landing of a group of enemies with a resounding crash. The Hulk section offered the purest sense of amusement and was most surprising in turning the jade giant into a green and green Persian prince.

Captain America game in Marvel Avengers

The setting then goes to Helicarrier, where Captain America is attacked by several henchmen. His fight is a bit like the Batman Arkham game system and Marvel Spider-Man on PS4, with a lot of quick and brutal attacks that push him to cross the room from one enemy to another. Of course, there were a lot of shields, but we did not know how much control we give you on where he's going and how he's moving once he's left Cape's hand.

Another group of protected enemies appears as before, but Cape corrects them quickly. It was a key moment to illustrate how different heroes would tackle more advanced enemy types – should not they give Cape Town a tougher time, since it can not destroy them? – but it did not seem that they were any more difficult to face for Cape than they were for Thor.

Black Widow Game in Marvel Avengers

The last stage of the demo sees Black Widow change hands as she faces the level leader, Taskmaster. It starts with Widow jumping on Taskmaster and embarking on a crazy race as the bridge begins to explode. As chaos ensues, the other Avengers appear hoping to catch a bus full of people to avoid a disaster. All the while, Black Widow is hitting Taskmaster hard and dodging his attacks.

It was the time of the "Battle of New York" where most Avengers are presented in action at once, which will really make you feel like you are playing through an Avengers movie. That said, instead of this stock-packed sequence taking place organically in the game, you're longer for the very scripted driving, occasionally pressing a button.

After coming to a forced landing, Black Widow has to shoot down Taskmaster by dodging his attacks and reacting with martial arts moves, electric batons and a set of two pistols. She can also perform her signature movement by wrapping her legs around her neck and tipping it to the floor, naturally. Taskmaster can copy and counter all the movements he sees. Black Widow uses a stealth device to become invisible so you can sneak in and shoot it – you can not copy what you can not see!

After seeing someone embody the most powerful Avengers with an arsenal of incredible abilities, he felt a bit countercyclical to end up on the only hero who is a normal person – even one as cool as Black Widow with his assortment of gadgets.

General Thoughts on the Marvel Avengers Game

Even though we still have not had the chance to play ourselves, the Marvel Avengers definitely feel like they're living the fantasy of fighting evil as the most emblematic of the Avengers. You can do all the coolest moves and watch a breathtaking cinematic performance.

During the fight, the graphics were perfect, but the short cinematic scenes did not seem as polite (Thor's hair was particularly strange when they were blowing in the wind) and the team's jokes were neither particularly funny nor memorable. Thor, in particular, stands out as a sore thumb because he talks a lot in Chris Hemsworth's original cadence right before the engaging and hilarious reinvention of the character by Ragnarok. Although this is of course a demonstration of a game still in progress that will not be released for almost a year, so, in theory, there is still a lot of time to sort out some of these things.

While Thor, Hulk, and Iron Man were each distinct enough to almost feel like completely different game characters, Cap and Widow were, we can understand, a little similar to the point of view of melee combat, without super dazzling powers. talk about. Still, it was a good moment to watch the Avengers react to a supervillain attack and do what they do best.

No idea has been given about the type of game this will represent beyond the demo. So we'll have to wait to see the details on the progress, the customization and other elements. But as far as this demo is concerned, the initial gameplay seems solid despite some obvious flaws.
