Marvel is working on several animated shows after what if …?

What if … from Marvel? marked the MCU’s very first foray into animation, but it certainly won’t be the studio’s last animated series to debut on Disney Plus.

After the premiere of What If …? on Disney + this week, series executive producer Brad Winderbaum revealed to Variety that the show was just one of “multiple” MCU animated series slated for the streaming service, in addition to the previously announced second season. of What If…? and a series of “photo-real” animated short films following the adventures of Baby Groot.

The report notes that no animated feature film projects are currently planned, although Marvel recognizes the benefits of bringing a story to life through animation. Winderbaum has said they will determine which stories are suitable for the medium, as he has confirmed that all of the animated series lined up at Marvel are “in various stages of development.”

“We realized that there are a lot of interesting avenues that you can explore with animation,” he said. “Any project that we create will be something that needs to be animated for the story to be told. There is very little desire to take a piece of intellectual property that is popular because we put out a movie and just have it shown. subject. We’re not going to do that. “

What if…? Director Bryan Andrews worked with independent animation studios Flying Bark Productions, Squeeze Animation Studios and Blue Spirit to develop the series’ “unique aesthetic”. Winderbaum has hinted that Marvel will be ready to work with Disney Animation or even Disney’s Pixar in the future, provided it’s “under the right circumstances.”

Winderbaum has also confirmed that all of the shows will involve “original ideas,” drawing on well-known titles and characters already in the MCU as well as untapped sources from the comics, however, due to the lengthy production process involved in making it happen. animation, it will probably be a while before one of these new animated shows gets put on a Marvel slate.
