Marvel launches final trailer for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

With WandaVision now in the rearview mirror, Marvel fans turned to the looming premiere of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier this Friday. Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprise their roles as Sam Wilson (The Falcon) and Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier) for a series after the events of Avengers: Endgame.

As we previously reported, after the Avengers and their many allies finally defeated Thanos in End of Game, Steve Rogers / Captain America (Chris Evans) handed his shield to Sam so he could take over. But will Sam accept this? Sam and Bucky “will team up on a global adventure that will test their abilities and patience.” The main villain will be Baron Helmut Zemo, a Sokovian colonel turned terrorist obsessed with winning the Avengers, Daniel Brühl reprising the role of Captain America: Civil War. Director Kari Skogland said his appearance on the show showed him “paying for his crimes” and “in a very sad place.”

Emily VanCamp takes it back Civil war role of Sharon Carter, daughter of Peggy Carter, partner of Steve Rogers. Don Cheadle will make an appearance on the series as Rhodey / War Machine, and Georges St-Pierre is back as mercenary and kickboxing master Georges Batroc, whose last MCU appearance was in Winter Soldier. Wyatt Russell plays John F. Walker, who is the choice of the US government to be Captain America’s successor. The studio released an action-packed, action-packed “first look” trailer for the series on Disney Investor Day in December, which featured the buddy-cop vibe of the titular superheroes, trading beards and crazy rounds between the fights against the baddies. A second trailer last month gave us a split-second glimpse of Zemo’s signature purple mask in the middle of all the action.

The final trailer opens with Sam practicing throwing Cap’s old shield, telling Bucky that he “feels like he belongs to someone else.” Both clearly grapple with the burden of trying to live up to Steve Rogers’ legacy and what he meant to so many people. Mackie said his character felt a particular apprehension about taking the shield: “How does a black man represent a country that does not represent him?” As for Bucky, Stan said his character on the show was “pretty lost and had an identity crisis again,” grappling with a century of trauma and his own lingering dark nature.

“Symbols are nothing without the men and women who give them meaning,” Sam says in a speech honoring Rogers, while another scene features a pushy politician: “We need someone. ‘one to inspire us again. ” Those who hope for a little more from Zemo will be disappointed; he’s largely absent from this latest trailer, as is Walker. But we get a few more images of the “anti-patriotism anarchist group” called the Flag-Smashers, with Erin Kellerman playing one of the masked members, Karli Morgenthau. “We will never stop. This world is ours,” we hear ourselves say of a montage of masked marauders who rob a bank and usually wreak havoc. “There is no turning back.” Sam tries to tell him it’s not necessarily a war.
