Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings won another victory necessary for the theatrical experience.
On Thursday, the Marvel Studios and Disney superhero film became the first pandemic-era title to cross $ 200 million at the North American box office.
Shang-Chi received an exclusive theatrical release compared to the simultaneous launch on the big screen and Disney + Premier Access, a practice Disney has adopted for some of its other Pandemic Era offerings, including Black Widow.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi stars Simu Liu as Marvel’s newest hero and is the studio’s first to focus on an Asian track. Its impressive box office performances were fueled by positive reviews, strong audience releases and an A CinemaScore. Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Tony Leung, Fala Chen and Michelle Yeoh are also on the bill.
The big-budget tent pole has skyrocketed from its debut in late summer, starting by setting a new Labor Day record by posting a four-day opening of $ 94.7 million. That included $ 75.4 million for Friday and Sunday, one of the best screenings on record for September and the second biggest weekend start of 2021 behind Marvel’s release. Black Widow ($ 80.3 million).
More recently, Shang-Chi pass Black Widow to become the most profitable version of the pandemic era in North America. Black Widow exceeded $ 183.4 million nationally and $ 379 million globally.
