Marvel Studios won its first Emmys thanks to WandaVision

The Creative Arts Emmys are always one of the most exciting parts of the Primetime Emmys, if only because you get the thrill of realizing that they have handed out dozens of awards when no one else was paying them. Be careful, but the reason no one is paying attention is because they’re actually released this weekend, a week before the Big Emmys. That’s not to say that the Creative Arts Emmys are less important, they just don’t have as many celebrities or categories that are of interest to the general public. But rewards are rewards, and this weekend’s wins are no less valid than next weekend’s… you just can’t see them delivered live. Additionally, they are distributed over three small events, two of which take place later in the day, rather than one big deal. (A modified version of the ceremonies will be broadcast on Saturday, September 18.)

A third of the Creative Arts Emmys were handed out last night, and there were already a few big winners, including the first Emmys won by Marvel Studios, courtesy of WandaVision. The trippy superhero spin-off took home the award for Best Production Design for Narrative and Best Sci-Fi Fantasy Costumes (two categories it seemed to have a pretty good lock on, if only because that it has cinematic quality superhero landscapes and period costumes from several generations). WandaVision was far from the big winner yesterday, with Netflix The Queen’s Gambit get seven Creative Arts Emmys, including awards for best production design, makeup and costumes for a period show. People who give awards love vintage stuff, that’s not new information.

Other winners include The Mandalorian, Pose, Ted lasso, SNL, and the Oscars ceremony last year. This particular award was for the show’s production design and not for the Outstanding Variety Special Award (which will be handed out later), so there’s really no reason to say how failed this show was. at the end.
