The head of Crystal Dynamics claims in an interview that there is still a lot of content left that Marvel’s Avengers players have yet to fully experience.
The studio behind Marvel’s Avengers says there is quite a bit of content that players have yet to experience. Crystal Dynamics’ video game against the notorious superhero team was met with an overall positive reception at launch, but the title faltered soon after. Marvel’s Avengers significantly underperforming expectations.
Problems began to emerge for Crystal Dynamics long before the game’s launch in the form of a controversial marketing campaign. From questionable character designs to an unpopular pre-order policy, Marvel’s Avengers seemed to face an uphill battle from the start. After the game’s release, other issues arose as the games wrapped up the main story and did not find the live service’s content compelling enough for long-term use. As the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S hit shelves in November 2020, Marvel’s Avengers had lost 96% of its player base and still had not made a profit.

In a recent interview with Game Informant, Scot Amos, studio director of Crystal Dynamics, spoke of the difficult launch of Marvel’s Avengers and what the studio has learned from the experience. Amos also took the opportunity to express his pride in what the team at Crystal Dynamics have created and acknowledged the communication failures that kept players from getting hooked from the start. While Amos says the studio has let down the playerbase, he has pledged to Marvel’s Avengers moving forward because the dev team knows what the game is really capable of and there is still a lot of content that players have yet to experience.
“We love what we’ve done with this game and desperately want everyone to be able to see this cool stuff and remove anything that is blocking or obscuring all the fun aspects. There are so many games that people just haven’t seen or that we haven’t done a great job of communicating. For our part, we are disappointed that we didn’t tell people correctly, that we didn’t get them hooked at the start as big as we wanted. […] We know we’re letting some fans down where we want it to be, but what we’ve come to and what I believe to be in this game is why, from top to bottom, we are committing to it because we know what’s here. “
Amos attributes Crystal Dynamics’ lack of communication with its players to the studio’s commitment to fixing the game after launch as Marvel’s Avengers needed some major fixes when it was released. With all the focus of making the base game live up to the studio’s vision, the studio was less confident in revealing Marvel’s Avengers long-term plan for additional content. This mistake has reshaped the mindset of Crystal Dynamics according to Amos, and the studio will be focusing on their communications efforts again in the future.
While it’s refreshing to hear a studio head recognize mistakes in a game’s release, it simultaneously feels like damage control in an attempt to bring some players back to Marvel’s Avengers. Thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the popularity of these comic book heroes is at an all time high and that should have resulted in a successful gameplay episode. Players will have to wait and see what Crystal Dynamics has in store before they can determine if a lack of communication was really the reason why Marvel’s Avengers had poor initial performance.
