Marvel's Shang-Chi film hires veteran Brie Larson, director Destin Daniel Cretton

Marvel would have hired Destin Daniel Cretton to direct the next Shang-Chi movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cretton is best known for leading the movie Short Term 12, an independent film about the supervisor of a group home for troubled teens. Brie Larson, known for her Oscar-winning performance in Room and incarnation of the star heroine in the recent Captain Marvel, gave her first major performance at Short Term 12. Larson then teamed up with Cretton in The Glass Castle. again alongside Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx in the upcoming Just Mercy movie.

Other filmmakers suspected of shooting in Shang-Chi include Justin Tipping, Alan Yang and Deborah Chow.

Shang-Chi will be Marvel's first MCU film featuring a major Asian actor, as well as mostly Asian and American Asian actors. Shang-Chi, known as "Master of Kung Fu," first appeared in the Marvel Special Edition No. 15 in 1973. Created by writer Steve Englehart and the author of "The Kung Fu Master", he was the first to appear. artist Jim Starlin, Shang-Chi finally got the power to create copies of himself.

While many aspects of the character have become obsolete by current standards, Marvel would aim to update it for the modern audience. Dave Callaham, who co-wrote the upcoming 1984 Wonder Woman and wrote a sequel for Into the Spider-Verse, is working on a script for Shang-Chi.

It was revealed that Marvel was developing a Shang-Chi movie last December, although the company announced its intention to shoot a hero-based film in 2005 – once the MCU began to take shape, it seems that Shang-Chi has been put on the back-burner.
