Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, is scheduled to meet President Donald Trump on Thursday afternoon at the Oval Office, the White House announced.
They have a lot to say, from the closing of assembly plants by GM to ongoing discussions at the UAW through the agreement on fuel consumption reached between California and four Other automakers and car manufacturer's footprint in China, the world's largest car market.
GM has regularly been the target of angry tweets from the president. Last week, he had wrongly criticized the company for "transferring large factories to China".
GM's US membership is smaller than that of Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, but it remains at the top of Detroit Three sales. And that has not "moved" factories in China. Almost all cars that GM and its Chinese partners build in China are sold there.
GM has closed this year its assembly plant of Lordstown in Ohio and its two transmission plants. The Detroit-Hamtramck meeting is expected to idle in January, although contract negotiations are underway with the UAW.
Trump's GM-China tweet followed about a week ago by the president's call to US companies to pull out of China, where GM earns about $ 2 billion a year.
Months earlier, Trump had touched Barra at the closure of the plant in Lordstown, in critical condition for the president's candidacy for reelection, but the administration is in favor of ongoing negotiations to sell the plant to a group related to the Workhorse electric truck builder.
So far at least, GM has refused to join Ford, Honda, Volkswagen and BMW said they would voluntarily join a compromise with California on fuel economy standards.
