Five people, including a pregnant woman, were found gunned down inside an Indianapolis home in an apparent targeted attack, the city’s police chief said, calling the killings “mass murder. “and” different evil “.
The fatal shooting was discovered on Sunday by police who found a young man with gunshot wounds before being called around 4 a.m. to investigate reports of a person shot in the city’s northeast, said Sgt. Shane Foley of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police.
The call took them to a nearby house, where they found five adults dead inside from gunshot wounds.
No suspect was in custody on Sunday evening.
Kezzie Childs, 42, Raymond Childs, 42, Elijah Childs, 18, Rita Childs, 13, and Kiara Hawkins, 19, and Hawkins’ unborn child were pronounced dead after being found at the home , Foley said.
Hawkins was first taken to an area hospital, but she and the unborn child died despite rescue efforts, Foley said.
He said the minor originally found with gunshot wounds is expected to survive and police believe he was injured in the shootings that killed the other five, as well as the unborn child.
Police Chief Randal Taylor said police believed the deadly gunfire was not random, but was a targeted attack.
He said the shooting came days after police department officials announced their latest efforts to tackle violent drug crimes and “violence motivated by poverty or desperation.”
“But what we saw this morning was a different kind of evil. What happened this morning, based on the evidence that has been gathered so far, was mass murder, ”Taylor said at a press conference. “More than that, we think it was not random.”
Taylor said it was the largest full-scale shooting in the city in more than a decade, and urged the public to contact police and pass on any information they may have about the killings.
Mayor Joe Hogsett called the shootings “mass murder” and said that one or more individuals had brought “terror to our community”. He said he contacted officials from the FBI field office in Indianapolis, the local U.S. attorneys office and other law enforcement agencies for assistance in the shooting investigation.
“I want officials to know that all the power of local, state and federal law enforcement is coming for them as I speak,” he said.
