A supplier to the Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Registry is still working to fully restore vehicle inspections after a malware attack disrupted service on Tuesday.

Massachusetts inspection stickers will not be issued for the third consecutive day. The problem ended inspections on Tuesday and motorists have not been able to obtain stickers since.

In a statement Wednesday night, Wisconsin-based Applus Technologies, Inc. said it detected and stopped a malware attack that was temporarily preventing Massachusetts and other states from conducting vehicle inspections.

Applus Technologies said it “will take some time to fully restore the functionality of vehicle inspections,” in part because the company needs to reset its IT environment.

“Unfortunately, such incidents are quite common and no one is immune,” said Darrin Greene, CEO of Applus Technologies, Inc. in a statement. “We apologize for any inconvenience this incident may cause. We know our customers and many vehicle owners trust our technology and we are committed to getting back to normal operations as quickly as possible. “

While Applus Technologies fixes the issue, many of the March 2020 inspection stickers have expired. The RMV has notified law enforcement and asks for its cooperation and discretion not to name drivers who have visited an inspection site on Tuesday or Wednesday.

RMV on Wednesday urged Applus Technologies to provide a timeline and confirm the extent of the outage, which the agency said has affected drivers and small businesses operating inspection stations across the country.

“Recognizing the inconvenience caused by the Applus outage, RMV has been in contact with law enforcement to request cooperation and discretion citing those with an expired sticker who allegedly attempted to visit a station this week,” said RMV.

RMV also extended the 60-day retesting requirement during the outage. RMV noted that the interruption would not affect planned or future training, nor the processing of new inspectors or renewed station licenses.
