Massive East Village fire damages nearby historic church – NBC New York

[ad_1]

A five-alarm fire in a vacant East Village building on Saturday morning spread to nearby Middle Collegiate Church, which firefighters are actively fighting to save.

The fire started just before 5 a.m. in the vacant building on East 7th Street.

It then spread to the nearby 19th century church on Second Avenue; the roof was completely engulfed in flames at 6 a.m.

Nearly 200 firefighters are fighting the blaze. No injuries were reported.

This is a developing story.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported the name of the church affected by the fire. This is Middle Collegiate Church on Second Avenue, not St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church on 7th Street.
