Mild conditions at Augusta National led to another scoring windfall at the 2020 Masters on Friday as 23 golfers posted below-par scores in the second round. action on moving day.
There was plenty of movement and shaking at the top of the leaderboard on Friday to whet the appetite for the weekend, and some of the sports stars shone. Justin Thomas gathered a 3 under 69 to claim a share of the lead, Abraham Ancer clocked the fastest lap in his Masters debut with a 67, and Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith both put up some quality rounds. All four share the lead at 9 cents as we get to Saturday.
However, that wasn’t all the rage for contenders on Day 2 of this year’s competition. Thursday’s leader Paul Casey fell outside the top 10 after completing 11 holes. Tiger Woods, top 10 in the table after Thursday, fell to T22 after a second round tied for 10. And Bryson DeChambeau, after a first round of 70, is set to potentially miss the cup as he tries to dig an early morning implosion. He is 1 on the general and finished 3 on the day before the game. DeChambeau will resume early Saturday morning with an eagle attempt at the 13th par 5 hole.
The second round has been called due to darkness, but it will resume at 7:30 am ET and round 3 is scheduled to start at 10:30 am The goal at Augusta National is to complete the third round on Saturday. As for the rest of the suitors, here’s a look at what happened from Friday.
Masters Ranking 2020
T1. Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Abraham Ancer and Cameron Smith (-9): It was Ancer and Smith who won the best rounds in this quartet on Friday after posting 67 and 68, respectively, to take a lead share. But Johnson and Thomas, world No. 1 and No. 3, were more stable than ever. Johnson followed up his scorching 65 in the first round with a 70, while Thomas finished with a 69. He finished his second round with seven birdies as JT and DJ played nearly a round and a half on Friday.
T5. Jon Rahm, Patrick Cantlay and Sungjae Im (-8): Cantlay, 6 under 66, was tied for the lowest score of the second inning of the day as he moved up the standings into the top five. It was his first run without a bogey at Augusta since run three last year and an outing that put him an incredible 20 under par in his last four runs at the Masters.
T8. Justin Rose, Danny Willett and 4 others (-7): 2016 Masters champion tied for the low round of the day with his own 6-under 66, redeeming himself from a first round of 71. It was the best single-round score in the event for him of his career. Rose, the two-time Masters finalist, had a rough start to the day. From the second nine, he was 1 of his first nine before playing his last nine at 3 under.
T14. Xander Sc Chauffageele, Paul Casey and 3 others (-6): Scheatele’s second round was trending upwards after the game was called on Thursday as he was 1 under 12 holes after starting his day on the second nine. He doubled his second hole of the day on Friday, but found a little groove with a birdie on the par 5 13th. Before the game was called, he birdied back-to-back numbers 2 and 3.
T19. Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson and Charles Howell III (-5): You haven’t counted a quadruple major champion after his first 70 rounds, have you? Because that would be silly. Koepka brought some heat on Friday to prove it, scoring a six-birdie-filled 69 that day. Mickelson turned 70, while Howell (an Augusta, Georgia native) is 4 under on his second round with three holes to play.
T22. Tiger Woods and 4 others (-4): Woods was among those who completed their second round on Friday. He started late on Saturday and finished even overall, although he was able to make a run on moving day. However, Tiger is now five behind the leaders, with a few heavy hitters ahead of him. It will be a trek to the top through these golfers.
T27. Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and 5 others (-3): If not for an opening round 75 for McIlroy, we could potentially speak of him as an incoming favorite on the weekend after what he did on Friday. He got a 66 in the second round – tied for his second-best 18-hole Masters score – and stepped up despite a few tight misfires with the putter on several occasions. Scheffler failed to complete his second round but is 2 under through 13 holes.
T61. Bryson DeChambeau and 7 others (+1): DeChambeau stopped before a total implosion, but the start was not pretty. He tripled the 3rd par 4, then three of his next four to dig a hole as he neared the turn. Birdies from No.6, 8 and 12 keep him afloat, but he needs to complete his second tour force to play this weekend. He will resume his round on Saturday morning with an eagle putt on par 5 13th.
