The first day of the Masters 2020 was nothing if not eventful. What started as a three hour delay in bad weather gave way to a scoring frenzy throughout the morning and afternoon, as mild and attackable conditions saw more than two dozen golfers recorded subpar rounds that day. Due to the late start and daylight saving time, some golfers were unable to complete their first rounds, with the action continuing Friday morning.
As it stands, Paul Casey leads the field at 7 under after posting a 65 without a bogey, scoring his best first-round score in a major of his career. Behind him sit Xander ScHotele, Justin Thomas and Webb Simpson sit T2 at 5 cents, followed by a long list of names – among them defending champion Tiger Woods at 4 cents.
Woods comes off his unlikely Masters victory a year ago, and he came into the week after stumbling for most of 2020. But he posted his first bogey-less run in a major championship in his Last 105 attempts in the first round, finishing just three shots. out of the head. Woods tied his first round bass to a Masters by posting a 4 under 68.

1. Paul Casey (-7): In his 66th career majors appearance, Casey achieved his best first-round score in such an event. The Englishman turned in a clean 7-under scorecard topped by an eagle on the 2nd par-5 hole. Casey, 43, has not won a major championship in his career, but had a best career Q4 result at Augusta in 2016. He had his best Masters start.
T2. Webb Simpson (-5): After finishing his best Masters career a year ago (T5), Simpson picked up where he left off Thursday by opening with a 5-under 67. He managed to minimize errors, flipping a card without bogey while taking advantage of the 2nd par 5 hole with an eagle like Casey.
T2. Xander ScHotele (-5): ScHotele opened his red round out of the gate, posting three birdies in his first three holes. He never completely cooled down either. Sc Chaudele bogeyed two of his next seven holes before finishing with four bogeys in his last eight. Only Casey and ScHotele posted 32 or better on the second nine.
T2. Justin Thomas (-5)On Friday we might talk about Thomas as the leader after the first round. After securing a late jump in the afternoon flight, Thomas got off to a torrential start, posting a top nine score of 4 under and birdieing at No.10 before the game was called. He sits just two shots from Casey with eight holes to go.
T5. Tiger Woods, Patrick Reed and six others (-4): Woods’ last two major league outings have resulted in missed cuts or top 30 rankings, so what he did on Thursday was just spectacular (and somewhat unexpected). He took advantage of the two par 5s on the second nine and played with a handsome swagger as he approached the finish line, playing the last six holes at 3 under.
T13. Jon Rahm, Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau, Dustin Johnson and four others (-3): It was a great rally for Rahm after a slow start. He bugged two of his first three holes and looked askance out the door, visibly showing frustration. But he finished the second nine at 3 pennies and played the first nine at 2 pennies. Finau had a round 1 up and down topped by an eagle on the par-5 15. Fowler couldn’t finish, but he took advantage of the mild conditions with a first 11 holes without a bogey to reach 3 under.
T21. Bryson DeChambeau and 12 others (-2): DeChambeau, the Masters favorite at the start of the day, hit two provisional balls through three holes as he struggled early to find his distance and control. But the double bogey he posted at No 13 after a wild goose hunt to find his bush tied ball was a turning point as he played the last 14 holes at 4 under. He hit 8 of 14 fairways on the day and averaged 334 yards driving, better than the field average of nearly 50 yards.
T51. Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and 11 others (E): There has been a lot of noise about DeChambeau’s length off the coming tees this week, but McIlroy has so far averaged 352 yards per drive through nine holes (at DeChambeau’s 334-18). He’s even on tour. Morikawa, the winner of the 2020 PGA Championship, also sits in the same spot on the standings nine times. After a birdie at # 2, he alternated bogey and birdie on 5, 6 and 7.
T72. Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth and 8 others (+2): Koepka withdrew from the US Open earlier this fall due to persistent knee and hip injuries from which he was hoping to recover. So far he has looked less than sharp in his attempt to win his first Masters, posting bogeys at numbers 7 and 10 before the game is called. Spieth, the 2015 Masters champion, finished his round playing his last nine tied.
