Eight months after Warner Bros. rocked Hollywood with the announcement that its 2021 roster would debut in theaters, and on HBO Max, the studio used CinemaCon to reassure movie theater owners that it is still very active in the movie business.

Warners showed clips from the studio’s upcoming roster, including the first trailer for the new title The matrix: resurrections (December 22) and a closer look at The batman (March 4, 2022) and Dune (October 22), as well as footage by James Wan Smart, Clint Eastwood’s crying macho, The Soprano prequel The Many Saints of Newark and the star of Will Smith king richard.

Jeff Goldstein, president of national distribution, and Andrew Cripps, president of international theatrical distribution, appeared in a pre-recorded video for the presentation. Goldstein noted that the studio released 13 new films in theaters during the pandemic period and praised the owners for bringing audiences in – then showcased their next films, perhaps most notably. The matrix: resurrections.

Before the presentation, little was known about the fourth The matrix – not even the premise or the title. The film is from original co-director Lana Wachowski and features Keanu Reeves original trilogy stars Carrie-Anne Moss, both of whom were widely featured in a trailer played for audiences at CinemaCon but not released. in line.

The trailer began with Thomas Anderson (Reeves) in therapy, telling his therapist (Neil Patrick Harris), “I had dreams that weren’t just dreams. Am I crazy? ”He senses that something is wrong with the world, but he has no memory of The Matrix. Later, he meets a woman (Moss) in a cafe. They shake hands, and he seems to be something between them, but neither can remember the other. Thomas de Reeves spends his days taking prescription blue pills and wondering why everyone in his world is glued to their phones – watching around him and realizing that he’s the only one in a crowded elevator not looking at a device.

Eventually, Thomas de Reeves meets a man (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) who is reminiscent of Morpheus, the freedom fighter played by Laurence Fishburne in the original trilogy. This mysterious man hands Anderson a red pill, and soon we see footage of him in The Matrix, with the film following similar beats to the original, including Neo fighting the Morpheus-like figure in a dojo, and an image of Neo in an incubator.

The original Matrix has grown into a defining sci-fi action film with significant influence on the genre. He won four Oscars in the visual effects, editing, sound and sound editing categories. The VFX signature – known as the “bullet time” effect – continued to be widely used in entertainment. The trailer shown at CinemaCon shows that there will be a visual style similar to the original, as well as some new VFX cheats.

“From the moment I read the script, it absolutely brought back those memories,” said Goldstein, who worked on the first one. Matrix. “I was completely stunned.”

The film, produced by Village Roadshow, also stars Jada Pinkett Smith and Jessica Henwick.

The studio also showed The batman with a sizzle coil. The images of The batman comes almost exactly one year to the day after the first trailer for the comic book movie directed by Matt Reeves, which stars Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight. The film also features Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred, and villains such as Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, Paul Dano as The Riddler.

Reeves noted that the film was partly inspired by Batman: First year, the flagship work of writer Frank Miller, while Pattinson reflected on the difference between this version of Batman and those seen on screen before.

“He’s really working on that rage,” Pattinson said in a featurette. “All the fights seem very personal.”

The presentation of Warner Bros. also signaled what looks like a really big year for Oscar nominated cinematographer Greig Fraser (Lion), who took both Dune and The batman – creating distinctly different but epic looks for everyone.

CinemaCon comes as movie theater owners worry about the movie theater window shattering amid the coronavirus pandemic. Previous presentations by Sony and MGM have seen executives at these studios claim that their films are not going to streaming services and theaters simultaneously. In December, Warner Bros. rocked the industry with the announcement that its entire 2021 roster would debut day and date in theaters and on HBO Max, which, like Warners, is owned by WarnerMedia. The move sparked backlash from theater owners and talent, including filmmaker Christopher Nolan, who had a long-standing relationship with the studio, and Duneby Denis Villeneuve.

Warners will resume giving films an exclusive theatrical window next year, with its 2022 roster in theaters for 45 days as part of a deal released earlier this month. Meanwhile, the studio is developing films directly for HBO Max, including upcoming DC titles. Bat girl and Blue beetle.

At the top of the presentation, Cripps spoke about the power of cinema, comparing it favorably to watching a movie at home.

“It turns out size matters,” Cripps said. “Watching Godzilla vs. Kong on your iPad doesn’t have the same impact as going to the movies.
