Matt Damon and Adam Driver fight to the death in The Last Duel

The trailer for Ridley Scott’s next historical epic features plenty of clicker armor, accusations, and not to mention a good old cry from Adam Driver. During 2 minutes, with large images reinforced by a strong cast, a crime committed against a woman becomes the setting for a conflict between two men as they clash with swords in The last duel.

Set in medieval France, Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) accuses Jacques Le Gris (Driver) of having raped his wife, Marguerite de Carrouges (played by Jodie Comer). Jean appeals to the High Court for a fight to the death for the alleged crime of Le Gris, a rare occurrence at this time. Friends who have become rivals find in a duel for their reputation and their life. If Carrouges loses, Mthe argument will be burned at the stake as a false accuser.

The landmark film is based on Eric Jager’s book The last duel: a true story of the trial by combat in medieval France, which reveals the entire complicated and widely theorized story surrounding the duel. It was indeed the very last judicial duel in France—as they probably understood it was archaic and brutal forcing men to kill or be killed as a token of honor or the will of God (or whatever) without achieving real justice. As the character of Comer puts it in the trailer, “You risk my life, so you can save your pride.

Damon and Ben Affleck have teamed up again for their first screenplay written together since Goodwill hunting, with the help of Nicole Holofcener (Can you ever forgive me?, Enough said). Affleck plays a supporting role in the film and looks almost unrecognizable as Le Gris’s ally, Count Pierre d’Alençon with his icy white hair.

The last duel premieres in theaters on October 15.
