Matt James reacts to Chris Harrison leaving ‘the Bachelor’

Bachelor Matt James released a statement following Chris Harrison’s interview with Rachel Lindsay, in which the host defended candidate Rachael Kirkconnell amid a controversy over racism. Matt was initially the franchise’s first voice to speak about Rachael, but was followed by Chris’s confusing interview with Rachel Lindsay, which led to the host stepping down from the franchise. Rachael has since addressed the controversy herself.

Matt has since focused on his bachelor duties, but before the show airing dates in his town tonight with the last four (Bri Springs, Michelle Young, Serena Pitt and yes, Rachael Kirkconnell), he spoke of everything that has transpired.

Here’s what Matt’s statement says, in full:

“The past few weeks have been some of the most difficult of my life, and while there are several episodes left of the season, it is important that I take the time to address the disturbing information that has come to light since the end of filming, including the incredibly disappointing photos of Rachael Kirkconnell and the interview between Rachel Lindsay and Chris Harrison. The reality is that I am learning these situations in real time, and it has been devastating and heartbreaking to put it bluntly. Chris’ failure to receive and understand the emotional work my friend Rachel Lindsay was undertaking in gracefully and patiently explaining the racist story of Antebellum South, a painful story every American should understand intimately, was unsettling and painful to watch. As Blacks and their allies immediately knew and understood, this clearly reflected a much larger problem that The Bachelor franchise had failed to adequately address for years.

This moment sparked critical conversations and reporting, raised important questions, and sparked inspiring displays of solidarity from The Bachelor nation. It also prompted me to re-evaluate and process what my experience on The Bachelor means, not just to me, but to all of the contestants of color, especially the black contestants from this season and past seasons, and to you, home viewers.

I will continue to process this experience and you will hear more from me at the end. My biggest prayer is that this is an inflection point that results in real and institutional change for the better. “
