After the Packers drafted running back AJ Dillon in the second round in April, general manager Brian Gutekunst referred to Eddie Lacy as the last big-back the Packers played in a leading offensive role.
Lacy’s girth was a frequent topic of discussion during his time in the NFL, and Dillon’s height got people talking after his first practices at training camp. While Lacy’s goal was to find out if he was overweight, it’s Dillon’s muscles that get the attention.
Dillon has a pair of tree trunks for his legs and Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said he’s never seen a back built like the rookie.
“He has huge legs,” LaFleur said, via ESPN.com. “This is something we discussed with our staff, we haven’t seen a running back like that – not in my career, which I’ve known. It walks around quite comfortably at 250 for a back and moves really well. Big legs, big calves. He’s a well-built guy. It will be exciting to see him level up mentally. It will be his biggest obstacle, especially with the guys in this room who are quite comfortable in attack. But he’s a big boy.
Dillon gives the Packers a very different look behind Aaron Jones and, with Jones in the final year of his contract, a quick transition to the NFL could lead the big back to regain the lead at Green Bay.
