Matt LaFleur to consider forgoing calling offensive plays

Matt LaFleur has already changed his defensive and special team coordinators. Could he also adjust his offensive play caller?

That would mean stepping down from those duties, which he’s been in charge of since becoming the Packers’ head coach in 2019.

After finishing the season leading the league in scoring and No.5 in yards, the Packers seemingly don’t need a chance. But LaFleur believes that everything is under consideration if it can help the team.

“Regarding the play call, I would have no problem handing that over to [offensive coordinator] Nathaniel Hackett. It’s the confidence I have in him, ”said LaFleur at his press conference on Monday. “Our process, I think, is very, very efficient in attack. And Nathaniel is running this. But in terms of what’s going to happen, it’s something I think we’ll continue to talk about this offseason. And if it’s better for me to ditch that in favor of the team, that’s exactly what’s going to happen.

That being said, LaFleur doesn’t anticipate that will happen from February 1, because at this point he doesn’t think it’s necessary.

“It’s just the confidence I have in our offensive team, whether it’s myself or Hackett calling the games, I don’t see that being any different,” said LaFleur. “I think too often that these guys don’t get the credit they deserve. He’s such a good offensive coordinator, really [setting] the table and making sure everything is just right for us to go out there and perform at the highest level. And he does a great job and I just don’t think he’s getting the recognition he deserves.
