Bears coach Matt Nagy has said quarterback Andy Dalton will start the regular season opener against the Bears. On Monday, however, Nagy said something that caught Chris Simms’ ear.
So Simms told me about it. So I found the video. And it’s at least worth wondering what that means.
Here’s what Nagy said about Andy Dalton: “We love what he’s doing with those in training right now, and I think that’s probably what makes us feel good. But we also like where Justin [Fields] is at and see it grow. And so that’s what we kind of need to talk about over the next couple of weeks. “
If Dalton is definitely the starter, what is there to say? Could it be that the door is open for Fields to change Nagy’s mind? Or does Nagy plan to have a set of parts for Fields in the first week and beyond?
Either way, it’s an intriguing comment, which comes at the end of Nagy’s long answer about Dalton. And it shows that while the Bears want to see what Dalton can do in the regular season, they still seem to be paying close attention to where Fields is and what he might be able to do.
