Despite leading the Rams to a Super Bowl, Jared Goff’s job security is now in doubt after reports surfaced regarding Los Angeles’ interest in Matthew Stafford. Stafford considers the Rams a “viable candidate” for his service, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. The Rams have indeed explored the possibility of trading for Stafford, per Fowler.
Goff’s current contract could play a role in whether or not a trade is possible. Goff has four years left on his $ 134 million stretch, with potential after the 2023 season. Former No. 1 overall pick, Goff, 26, is 40-30 as a Rams starting quarterback . He went 9-6 as a Rams starter in 2020 while helping Los Angeles return to the playoffs after a one-year absence.
About a third of the league has contacted the Lions to discuss a possible trade for Stafford, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The Lions will likely receive at least one future first-round pick in exchange for Stafford, by Rapoport. Earlier this week, we broke down the five most likely trade adjustments for Stafford.
After 12 seasons together, Stafford and the Lions agreed to go their separate ways via trade. Lions coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes, both hired earlier this month, knew before they were hired that the Lions were planning to trade Stafford, who has two more years under his current contract. The 32-year-old quarterback just finished a 2020 season that saw him complete 64.2% of his passes for 4,084 yards, 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Stafford, the Lions franchise leader in just about every career passing category, was named to his first and only Pro Bowl in 2014. A two-time NFL leader in passing attempts, Stafford is the one of eight quarterbacks in league history to throw for over 5,000 yards in a season. Stafford led the Lions to playoff spots in 2011, 2014 and 2016. Detroit have lost every one of their playoff games under Stafford and are still chasing their first playoff win since 1991.
The Lions have had some tough times over the past three seasons. During that span, Detroit posted a 14-33-1 record. The Lions’ lack of success led them to sack Matt Patricia with five games remaining in the 2020 regular season.

Stafford is not the only established quarterback whose future is currently not known. Deshaun Watson has publicly expressed his frustration with the Texans, who have endured a tumultuous offseason that includes the controversial hiring of general manager Nick Caserio.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said Thursday he was ready to adjust his contract in order to return to the Steelers for the 2021 season. Aaron Rodgers’ somewhat cryptic comments immediately following Green Bay’s title loss of NFC against Tampa Bay had led to questions regarding his future with the Packers. The Packers have since publicly stated that Rodgers will be his quarterback in 2021.
