It looks like another team entered the Matthew Stafford draw, and that’s somewhat unexpected.
By Jeremy Fowler of ESPNMatthew Stafford sees the Los Angeles Rams as a competitor in his commercial market, and the Rams themselves have been exploring options for adding Stafford to their squad.
This is surprising for several reasons. First, while Jared Goff has been disappointed for the past two seasons, he also signed a four-year extension just over a year ago and has a contract that is nearly impossible to terminate in 2021. Cutting it would actually cost them more money. than just keeping it, and while a trade frees up $ 12.4 million with a dead cap of $ 22.2 million, it’s a monster contract for the team to acquire it.
Plus, it’s unclear what the Rams might offer the Lions in return. They currently do not have a first round pick and select towards the end of each round. Here are the 2021 draft picks they should have this year:
That’s not exactly a ton of resources for 2021, unless the Lions are looking to stock up on a late third-round pick. Of course, the Rams could always tap into their future picks. Obviously, the Rams’ familiarity with new Lions general manager Brad Holmes could facilitate discussions.
The Rams are just the latest team to have an interest in Stafford. Lately, the Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49ers have dominated the rumor mill. With teams working side-by-side this week at the Senior Bowl, it’s no surprise that rumors are circulating. In fact, Albert Breer told Dan Patrick on Friday that he believed Lions will try to strike a deal before the Super Bowl.
Hold on to your hats.
