Ferrari may not have won the Canadian Grand Prix, which sports commissioners deny, but Mattia Binotto insists that there are still some positives to consider this weekend.
Sebastian Vettel took the pole position at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit, qualifying two tenths of the coveted grid ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
A day later, the German was racing towards victory, but the Montreal stewards denied him. He gave her a five-second penalty for a dangerous return to the track in her fight against Hamilton.
Vettel was second while teammate Charles Leclerc was third.
It was however another victory for Mercedes – their seventh trot.
Although disappointed with the result, the boss of the team, Binotto, said that there was something to be optimistic about.
"We leave Canada knowing that, as throughout the weekend, we have proven that we are competitive, which has strengthened the confidence of the entire team," he said.
"We were the fastest on the track and it's important … We know that there are weaknesses to correct, [but the] the season is not over.
As for Vettel's antics after the race, which saw the Ferrari driver placing the number 2 board in front of Hamilton's car while moving the number "1" to where it should have been, Binotto says this display was a good sign.
"It's a good sign for a driver," he said. "He is very hungry, we are all hungry here and this is certainly what will help us in the coming weeks, months and races.
"At the moment, our team is naturally disappointed, but our thoughts are mostly with Sebastian … I do not think he could have done things differently, that's why we decided to appeal the decision sports commissioners. "
