Carlile's emotional greetings were only one of many memorable moments from his debut in MSG, which included a selection of iconic songs spanning the entire career, as well as highlights from his already classic album, By the Way, published in 2018, I Forgive You. Mavis Staples and, not least, a mini-game surprise Highwomen (less Maren Morris, who "could not be here but made us drink," according to Carlile).
Carlile's show was another feat for the 38-year-old singer-songwriter who, over the last 18 months, has catapulted from being a long-time road warrior fan to Grammy superstar. Carlile made sure to take stock of the evening, repeatedly kissing the floor of the MSG scene before taking a stand, just before her breathtaking "Party of One," which she was perhaps about to conclude «The longest show [she’s] never played. "
Brandi Carlile played her biggest show in New York on Saturday (9/14) while she starred Madison Square Garden with a set inspired largely from her latest album, 2018 By the way, I forgive you, but also included many older pieces, a few times, and some appearances: namely, opener Mavis Staples, who came out for "Friendship" and stayed for "Highwomen", the title track for the new album of Brandi's new eponymous super group. Three quarters of the group, Amanda Shires, Natalie Hembyand Brandi, summoned for a mini Highwomen in the middle of the show, with only Maren Morris missing.
