The Dallas Mavericks have been looking for a secondary playmaker to team up with Luka Doncic. Among the potential options around the NBA related to the Mavs is Brooklyn Nets goalie Spencer Dinwiddie.

According to Ross Legion Hoops, the Mavericks and the Nets discussed a trade centered around Dinwiddie. The particular components Dallas required to execute a deal weren’t mentioned, but they recently bought the No.18 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

The Dallas Mavericks’ motivation to sign a deal for Dinwiddie is clear as he has shown an intriguing ability to create with basketball this season. He also brings size to the guard position, helping Mavs line up a switch-friendly defense perimeter.

The main concern that comes with the potential adjustment with Dinwiddie and the Mavericks is his inability to consistently convert on catch-and-shoot or pull-up jumpers. Dallas would need to be confident in his ability to handle the ball, but why take it out of Doncic’s hands for someone of Dinwiddie’s caliber?

Dinwiddie’s lack of off-ball impact is a key reason his production declined significantly when other frequently involved playmakers were on the field for the Brooklyn Nets. It is not an ideal partner for Doncic.

Unless the Dallas Mavericks stagger Spencer Dinwiddie’s minutes to take on a heavy playing load while Luka Doncic is resting, this pair doesn’t seem to make much sense. What Dinwiddie has shown during his time with the Brooklyn Nets just isn’t perfect.
