Dodgers first baseman Max Muncy will skip the National League Jokers game after suffering a dislocated left elbow on Sunday. There is no tear to her ulnar collateral ligament, but there is damage to the elbow joint, the extent of which will be known in the coming days.
Muncy remains unlikely to play in these playoffs, although neither the Dodgers nor Muncy are set to officially rule him out just yet.
“If I don’t have high hopes, then it’s going to be a tough few weeks for me. Muncy injured his elbow in a third inning collision at first base, trying to line up a pitch to the baseline as Brewers infielder Jace Peterson came to the sack. After losing his glove and the ball on impact, Muncy collapsed to the ground, writhing in pain. He left the field cautiously, holding his left arm.
X-rays and post-game tests were unclear, other than Roberts characterizing it as deeper than a soft tissue injury for Muncy.
“I dislocated my elbow on the play and it came back as I rolled on the ground. There was other damage in there. We’ll find out more in the next few days about that, but it was a very scary moment. I really felt like my arm wasn’t there, but luckily things weren’t as bad as they could have been.
Muncy was named an All-Star for the second time in 2021 and set a career-high with 36 home runs, reaching 0.249 / 0.368 / 0.527 with 94 RBIs leading the team and 95 runs scored. Muncy was also above average defensively at first base (+6 in defensive points saved, +9 in total zone score) and second base (+2 in saved defensive runs, +3 in total zone rating).
“He’s such a dynamic player, in the batter’s box defensively,” said manager Dave Roberts. “He just adds a lot to our ball club.”
But for now, and maybe all of October, Muncy will be a spectator.
