The Los Angeles Dodgers finally seemed to be their closest health with the start of the playoffs looming, but the final weekend of the regular season saw Clayton Kershaw and Max Muncy leave games early due to injury.
Clayton Kershaw came out of his start on Friday night in the second set and was subsequently placed on the 10-day injured list due to discomfort in his left forearm. Manager Dave Roberts said the team are preparing to do without Kershaw for the rest of the year.
On Sunday, Muncy was put out in the third inning when his left arm awkwardly bent in a collision with Jace Peterson as he crossed first base.
Muncy immediately fell and wrote in pain for several minutes. He eventually left the field and the Dodgers later announced he had injured his left elbow.
“There have been tests but it is still unclear what that means,” manager Dave Roberts said after his club completed a Milwaukee Brewers sweep.
“I think it’s still painful. We don’t want to close the door on a potential playoff appearance. We’re sort of going to see how he reacts in the next few days and see where that takes us. … I think it’s deeper than soft tissue. From what I hear, the x-rays and other scans, it’s still not clear. Which doesn’t sound good, but it’s the truth.
“That’s all I know at the moment. Like I said, I’m not going to close the door on Max looking out, but at the moment it sure doesn’t look great.
Although the Dodgers tied a franchise record with 106 wins, that wasn’t enough to win the National League West and they are set to face the St. Louis Cardinals in the Wild Card Game on Wednesday. They think they are heading towards the playoffs of a match without Muncy available.
“It’s very unlikely. Very unlikely, ”Roberts said of the left-handed hitter. “But when we look outside, I hope that increases the possibility.”
When asked if Muncy still wouldn’t be available if the Dodgers qualified for the NL Division Series, Roberts replied “it’s unlikely.”
Muncy has led the team this season with 36 homers, 94 RBIs and 262 total goals.
How are the Dodgers replacing Muncy?
With Adam Wainwright set to start for the Cardinals in the Wild Card Game, the Dodgers will likely go for a left-handed option at first base.
Cody Bellinger could slip from the outfield, or Matt Beaty could be pushed into a starting role. Beaty went 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs on the bench on Sunday.
“I think it’s more game-oriented and figuring out what’s going to give us the best chance of winning this game; take out the offensive and defensive potential as well, ”said Roberts of the first base prospect.
