NEW YORK – Former Rep. Max Rose will not be running for mayor of New York this year.
The Staten Island Democrat bowed out on Sunday, weeks after opening an account with the city’s Campaign Finance Board and announcing he was considering running for mayor.
“After careful consideration, I will not run for mayor of New York this year,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
Rose, an army veteran, had set her sights on city hall after losing her candidacy for re-election for a second term in Congress, defeated by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican.
But he has faced a slew of rivals and difficult electoral calculations: his base in Staten Island and south Brooklyn has some of the lowest voter turnouts in the Democratic primaries. And the moderate positions he has taken in Congress may have put him at odds with the main Democratic constituencies elsewhere in the city.
“I urge every candidate to recognize that in the five boroughs, no one believes that City Hall is on the side of the working class. People are scared and don’t know if the New York they love will still exist for years to come, ”Rose said. “The next mayor cannot just balance the budget, he has to build a social contract that leaves no one behind. New York can set an example for the rest of the world. “
He gave some clues about his political future, but said he and his wife Leigh are hoping to adopt a baby this year. Their son, Miles, was born last spring.
“Although I am not running for mayor this cycle, I am not going anywhere in the fight to make our city and our country keep their promises,” he said.
Rose lost the controversial congressional race in November after her opponent, Malliotakis, attacked her for attending a Black Lives Matter protest. Criticism of Mayor Bill de Blasio also played a big part in this run, with Rose broadcast an ad declaring in full: “Bill de Blasio is the worst mayor in New York history. That’s all the advertising. “
With Rose out of the race, mayoral candidates include lawyer Maya Wiley, former Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia, City Comptroller Scott Stringer, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, former HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, City Council Member Carlos Menchaca, Former Veterans Services Commissioner Loree Sutton, Former Nonprofit Leader Dianne Morales and Former Citigroup Vice President Ray McGuire.
Former presidential candidate Andrew Yang has applied, and has been spotted last week at locations around Brooklyn filming what could be an announcement video.
