Max Verstappen said championship rival Lewis Hamilton’s decision at the British Grand Prix was dangerous and the celebrations for the Mercedes driver’s victory after the race were disrespectful.
Hamilton cut Verstappen as the pair battled for the lead at Copse Corner in the opening round. Hamilton was fined ten seconds but still won the race to reduce Verstappen’s championship lead from 33 to seven points, earning his eighth British Grand Prix victory.
Verstappen went to the FIA medical center and then to the hospital for precautionary tweets, but was not injured in the incident.
Several hours after the race, Verstappen criticized Hamilton for his decision and his exuberant celebrations with Silverstone fans after his win, which he watched while still in hospital.
Verstappen tweeted: “Glad to be fine. Very disappointed to be out like this.
“The sanction imposed does not help us or do justice to the dangerous act Lewis made on the track. Watching the celebrations while he is still in the hospital is disrespectful and unsportsmanlike behavior, but we move on.” .
After the race, Red Bull boss Christian Horner called Hamilton an “amateur” for the move, saying it put Verstappen’s safety at risk.
