Mayim Bialik will be the interim host of “Jeopardy!” following Mike Richards’ abrupt resignation, a Sony Pictures Television spokesperson confirmed to NBC News.
Richards, the executive producer of “Jeopardy!” who was chosen to succeed Alex Trebek, announced on Friday that he was stepping down as host.
The news came after The Ringer reported that Richards made derogatory comments about women, Jews, the poor and Haiti seven years ago, while he was co-executive producer of “The Price Is. Right “and hosted a podcast called” The Randumb Show “.
Richards and Bialik were both among more than a dozen people – including former top contenders and celebrities – who served as acting guest hosts for season 37 of the show following the death of Trebek in November.
Bialik, 45, was already scheduled to host prime-time specials and spinoffs from the popular game show. The star of “The Big Bang Theory” also received a bachelor’s and a doctorate from UCLA in neuroscience.
“She is currently scheduled to record three weeks of episodes (15 episodes) when production resumes this week,” the Sony spokesperson said. “As we move forward with this season’s production of“ Jeopardy! “, additional guest hosts will be announced.”
New “Jeopardy!” the episodes are scheduled to begin airing on September 13, a representative from Sony Pictures Television said.
In his statement last week, Richards apologized. Sony has said it supports Richards’ decision to step down.
CNN first announced that Bialik would be the first guest host of the quiz.
