An influx of COVID-19 patients recently forced the Mayo Clinic’s Eau Claire Hospital to place four emergency beds in an ambulance garage. The four beds were filled on November 18 when they first install, but since then they have not been used.
Mayo officials say that while patients may be placed in a different space, employees have all the necessary equipment to provide patients with the appropriate care.
“We would never put them in an unsafe or unclean environment,” said Pam White, chief nurse at the Mayo Clinic Health System Northwestern Region. “It’s very clean, it’s hot, it’s an environment that is not ideal and we wouldn’t do that every day, but if you needed to be there to receive care, I would go. absolutely. It is a comfortable and temporary environment. “
Mayo also recently installed separate booths in the halls to prevent patients from grouping together while waiting for help, and they also allow nurses to sort patients quickly in a safe space. White says the hospital is already planning a second level of surge protocols in case beds are needed in other spaces around the facility.
