Mazda was make waves in the new car department in recent years, improving their public perception from discount brand to luxury brand, and its crossovers and SUVs are in large part to be thanked for the growth in sales. Thus, Mazda announced the launch of three new SUVs before 2023: the CX-50, the CX-70 and the CX-90.

Of course, Mazda Thursday Press release hasn’t really gone overboard on specifics, which we’ll likely receive as release dates get closer.

We do know a few things, however. We know that the CX-50 will share a platform with the current generation CX-30 and Mazda3, with production starting in January 2022. The CX-50 will have increased all-wheel drive capabilities and “features for lifestyles ”- but, honestly, what an SUV builder is not to advertise their cars as handyman’s outdoor champions these days? This car will likely fetch a few thousand dollars more than the CX-5’s base price of $ 26,545.

The other two models, the CX-90 and CX-70, will be based on a new six-cylinder architecture that Mazda has concocted, which replaces their current four-cylinder engine design. This same architecture also hosts plug-in hybrid capabilities, and we can expect them to go into production in late 2022 or early 2023. The price is a bit difficult to estimate on these, because they bring so many new components to the table, but again, all-wheel drive is standard.

From the sounds, the CX-50 will be more of a crossover style vehicle, while the CX-70 will be a two-row SUV and the CX-90 a full three-row SUV.

If you’re a CX-5 fan, don’t worry, Mazda isn’t planning to replace it anytime soon. If anything, these new models will help to further refine the much-loved CX-5. But it remains to be seen whether an SUV overload will be good for the company or not.
