Virginia’s Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s Hope campaign bucks the endorsement of his Republican opponent, Glenn Youngkin, by the Hampton Roads Black Caucus (HRBC).
Youngkin tweeted on Saturday that he was “humbled” by the endorsement of HRBC, which touts itself as a non-partisan organization aimed at “improving the black community.” The group had previously backed Democrats McAuliffe as governor in 2013 and Ralph Northam as governor in 2017.

“I am incredibly touched and honored to have the support of the Hampton Roads Black Caucus, and look forward to working closely with them and all of the Black Virginians to implement my Day One Game Plan to make the Virginia the best place to live, work and raise a family, ”Youngkin said in a statement Saturday.
“Terry McAuliffe hurt black Virginians by turning his back on our schools and our children, making our communities less safe and exploding the cost of living,” he added.
McAuliffe’s campaign and allies attempted to diminish approval by downplaying the group’s influence.
“@TeamYoungkin thinks Twitter is real life,” tweeted Manuel Bonder, deputy director of communications for the Virginia Democratic Party.
“I love it when Team Youngkin tweets HUGE NEWS about a Republican group supporting their Republican candidate,” McAuliffe campaign spokesperson Christina Freundlich wrote on Twitter, despite the group’s prior support for Democrats.
HRBC has also previously approved Cheryl Turpin, a Democrat who served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2018 to 2020.

The Youngkin campaign said the criticism is a sign McAuliffe is in trouble.
“40-year-old politician Terry McAuliffe knows he is losing, which is why he and his team are constantly seeking to downplay any group that dares to question his authority or disagrees with him. Youngkin campaign spokesperson Christian Martinez said in a statement.
“[McAauliffe] yelled at a sheriff who called him for embracing radical groups that want to fund the police, he doesn’t want parents to have a say in their children’s education, he wants employees to be fired s ‘they’re not getting the vaccine, and now he’s questioning the legitimacy of a historic black organization just for not supporting it, “the statement continued.” Terry McAuliffe is not a leader, he has never fit to be a governor in the first place. “
