The office of Representative of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy wonders if President Biden has changed his mind about coronavirus-related travel bans after it was reported that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention imposed a new restriction on travelers from South Africa.

“Has President Biden changed his mind about the effectiveness of the coronavirus entry bans?” McCarthy’s office asked. “Or are entry bans still ‘xenophobic alarmist’? What are they? The American people deserve to know.”
Asked by Fox News’ Peter Doocy about the new restrictions in light of Biden’s past comment, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said she didn’t think it was “a fair joint” .
“The president made it clear that he believed the Muslim ban was xenophobic,” Psaki said, noting that Biden had lifted the ban on travel from some Muslim-majority countries. Psaki also claimed that Biden and his team supported travel restrictions before taking office.

“But he criticized the former president for having a policy that was no more comprehensive than travel restrictions,” she added.
In a tweet published the day after the ban on travelers who had traveled to China was announced, Biden said: “We are in the midst of a crisis with the coronavirus. We have to lead the way with science – not Donald Trump’s record for hysteria, xenophobia and fear. “
The questioning of Biden’s current position on pandemic-related travel restrictions follows a Reuters report on the CDC’s new safeguard.
“We are adding South Africa to the shortlist due to the present disturbing variant which has already spread beyond South Africa,” said CDC Senior Deputy Director Dr. Anne Schuchat.

The restriction on South Africa is in addition to the ban on entry into the United States for most non-American citizens who have recently visited more than two dozen other countries, including Brazil, the United Kingdom, Ireland and 26 countries of the European continent. that allow crossing open borders, White House sources confirmed to Fox News.
The restrictions on Europe and Brazil were initially imposed by Trump. Two days before leaving office, Trump had ordered their lifting from Tuesday. Instead of letting the bans expire, Biden reinstated them.
