FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is taking advantage of a Republican compatriot's attack by selling "Cocaine Mitch" shirts on his campaign website.
The Kentucky legislator's 2020 re-election campaign tweeted Wednesday that McConnell was getting closer to one of his biggest fundraising days thanks to sales of bright red t-shirts, which feature a faceless character and black hair with the name "MITCH" With a pinch of cocaine. On the back, they say "TEAM MITCH" and "CARTEL MEMBER".

Don Blankenship coined the nickname "Cocaine Mitch" in an advertisement during his campaign in the Senate, which had failed in the Senate since West Virginia last year. He was referring to a 2014 magazine article alleging that drugs had been found aboard a commercial cargo ship owned by McConnell's wife's family, Elaine Chao, who held the position of secretary to the President Donald Trump's transport.
Blankenship, who has served a prison sentence for conspiring federal security offenses in the mines after the death of 29 men in an explosion at his Upper Big Branch mine, said he reacted to false negative announcements that McConnell's "marsh people" had been against him.
McConnell spoke of the "Cocaine Mitch" attack in a crush last year, mocking Blankenship's electoral defeat. With the help of a poster from Netflix's "Narcos" series, the McConnell campaign photographed the senator's head above the body of the actor describing Colombian drug dealer Pablo Escobar.
This is not the first time McConnell has adopted negative labels and images that could have condemned other politicians. Senator Spokesman Josh Holmes said Thursday that he has received more than 1,000 jersey orders and added bumper stickers to meet the demand.
