McConnell Says GOP Won’t Help Democrats Fund Debt Ceiling Deadlock ‘Socialist Shopping List’

Speaking to the chamber on Monday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urged Democrats to appropriate their exorbitant “socialist shopping list” and fund it without Republican votes. He said the GOP would either refuse to fund the Democrats’ next massive spending or be complicit in weighing down future generations by voting to raise the debt ceiling.

His statement comes after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Monday revealed a $ 3.5 trillion budget resolution that included provisions for health care, child care, climate change, immigration and other Democratic legislative priorities.

“So tragedy and comedy are two sides of the same coin,” he noted. McConnell said the tragedy is that the Democrats’ spending spree will cripple middle-class families. Meanwhile, the comedy is that Democrats masquerade as two-party politics when in reality “they won’t let Republicans have a say in this monstrosity.” . . but they want our help to increase their credit card to make it happen, ”said the GOP leader.

McConnell accused Democrats in Congress of trying to “tax and drive our country into oblivion” by “handing over the keys” to progressive Senator Bernie Sanders and the Socialist members of “the squad.” Citing the worsened inflationary effects of all bills passed in the past year, McConnell cited expert estimate that the Democrats’ $ 3.5 trillion prescription will cost Americans $ 5.5 trillion.

Republicans are already on track to grant Biden a major legislative victory with the nearly $ 1 trillion pending infrastructure package, which is expected to pave the way for the accompanying Social Democratic agenda – with almost three times the price to pay. McConnell was among 19 Republicans who voted to advance the old bill.

Warning of the damage Democrats’ policies will inflict, McConnell referred to unemployment insurance expansions exacerbating labor shortages, to the amnesty campaign amid a border crisis south and the damage caused by the Green New Deal to industries struggling to recover from the recession.

“It is our fellow Democrats who are not interested in what is historically normal. Their borrowing and spending are historically abnormal, ”he added.

McConnell confirmed that the GOP will not participate in a vote to raise the debt limit, noting that Democrats can push forward a sweeping step through reconciliation anyway without Republicans backing.

“Democrats have all the tools they need to raise the debt ceiling on a partisan basis. If they want 50 tight Democratic votes to spend billions and billions more, they can find 50 Democratic votes to fund it. If they don’t want the Republicans to contribute, they don’t need our help, ”he said.

“So, shouldn’t Democrats be proud of owning all the debt they need?” Our colleagues seem convinced that President Sanders’ vision is worth charging our children and grandchildren a massive bill. They deserve to have full ownership of this decision, ”concluded McConnell.
