EDMONTON, AB – Connor McDavid fears the worst when he crashed into the net and limped out of the ice during the Edmonton final on Saturday night.
Rare news of good news for him and the Oilers: his left knee injury is not as bad as he originally thought.
The X-rays were negative and McDavid was scheduled to undergo knee MRI on Sunday. The results will only be known in a day or two, but McDavid was relieved that the bones around his knee were in good condition after hitting the goalpost against Calgary.
"To be quite honest, I thought my leg was in two pieces when I was sitting on the ice," said McDavid, wearing a knee brace during his interview with reporters Sunday. "Fortunately, the bone is OK, luckily I was able to get up and, with a lot of help, I was able to get off.
"As I said, we still do not know much, but things look pretty positive right now, but we do not have a picture in there."
In the playoffs for the 12th time in the past 13 years, and having sacked his coach and general manager, Edmonton has put in place a break-up season that is expected to result in substantial changes in hockey operations. The Oilers do not need any type of serious injury for McDavid.
"They pay me 100 million dollars to play my game," McDavid said, questioned about throwing the net completely in the net in a match that made no difference to the team's chances in the playoffs. "Part of my game is beating guys and going to the net.
"I'll have to give back my money if I stop doing that, I do not do that."
Coach Todd McLellan was sacked on Nov. 20 and his chief executive Peter Chiarelli was fired on Jan. 23. Bob Nicholson's CEO is working hard to reorganize the Oilers' hockey games, which finished 35-38-9 despite McDavid's and Leon Draisaitl's 50-year career against the Flames.
"It's zero," said Draisaitl. "Obviously, every season, we try to participate in the playoffs, to win the Stanley Cup.That's why you play.
"When we take it away from you, because of our game, it's nobody's fault but ours, it's frustrating and yes, it sucks, but we have to understand that. as players. "
