The orange-colored drink will begin to reappear in select U.S. restaurants this month and will be available nationwide by June. McDonald’s said in a statement his comeback was prompted by rowdy fans on social media who “have been passionately asking us to bring him back over the years.”
Hi-C Orange Lavaburst, a non-carbonated drink, was replaced in 2017 by Sprite Tropic Berry, a carbonated drink manufactured by Coca-Cola exclusively for the chain. The withdrawal of the beloved drink after about 60 years on McDonalds menus sparked outrage from angry fans and a petition on Change.org.
Mcdonalds (MCD) has created a special website to track the re-entry of the drink. It will be updated on a weekly basis and can be used by entering a zip code. Hi-C will join Fanta Orange at McDonald’s soda fountains, once again completing its “legendary orange drink list,” the company said.
Fast food chains are constantly competing for dollars and customer attention, and specialty offerings and returning customer favorites is one way to try to keep noise down. McDonald’s also regularly taps into the millennial nostalgia for promotions, as a guideline bringing back Hi-C since it was popular in the 1990s.
