McDonald's buys Appreciation for voice recognition while driving

You may not be able to wait long before you can place an order at McDonald's by chatting with a machine.

The hamburger chain announced Tuesday the acquisition of a Bay Area voice recognition start-up called Learn, with the intention of using it to take orders at ATMs. The companies have already held demonstrations at McDonald's test restaurants. According to McDonald's, Apprenticeship technology aims to address "a complex, multi-lingual, multi-accent and multi-element conversation order".

McDonald's has introduced a number of new ways to order food in recent years, including in-store touchscreen kiosks, smartphone apps and integration with food distribution platforms such as Uber Eats.

The apprentice employees will form a new Silicon Valley-based unit called McD Tech Labs, which McDonald's plans to expand over time.. And what about the McDonald's workers who currently have to decipher what customers say about their cars? McDonald's says all new control technologies are part of its efforts to "ease the pressure on restaurant employees."

This is McDonald's third recent technology investment. Earlier this year, the company bought Dynamic Yield, which customizes the driving menus based on factors such as weather and time. McDonald's has also invested in Plexure, a New Zealand company that manufactures some of its mobile applications.
