McDonald’s New Crispy Chicken Sandwiches Have an Official Launch Date

McDonald’s has announced the release date for its new Crispy Chicken Sandwiches, because of course McDonald’s won’t let Popeyes have that one thing, for once.

Speaking to Reuters, Mickey D confirmed that the three new sandwiches will debut on February 24, 2021, more than a year after they first appeared in the Knoxville, Tennessee, and Houston restaurant trial markets, in Texas.

In addition to the standard and deluxe versions of McDonald's Crispy Chicken Sandwich, the chain would offer a spicy version.

The sandwich, as offered in Knoxville and Houston, included a fried chicken fillet served on a potato roll, topped with butter and pickles, while the deluxe version included tomatoes, lettuce and mayonnaise. Reuters reported that a spicy version would also be available.

Likewise, Popeyes’ Chicken Sandwich and Chick-fil-A’s Original Chicken Sandwich are both served with fried chicken fillets, gravy – or butter, in the case of Chick-fil-A – and pickles. As the photos released by McDonald’s last year show, the chain’s new sandwiches will also be served in a foil-lined sandwich bag, just like its competitors.

On the current menu, McDonald’s has a crispy buttermilk chicken sandwich, served in a box, and a McChicken, which is wrapped in foil.

McDonald's originally announced in November that its new crispy chicken sandwich would be on national menus in 2021, although the chain did not give a specific date.

McDonald’s originally announced in November that its new crispy chicken sandwich would be on national menus in 2021, though the chain did not release a specific date at that time.

“McDonald’s has a significant opportunity to expand its offering of chicken, a category that is growing faster than beef,” the restaurant said in a statement at the time. “This includes leveraging the extraordinary global strength of Chicken McNuggets and the McChicken Sandwich, and investing in new line extensions and new flavors. It also means continuing to offer foods that match consumer trends and with current taste profiles, such as spicy. “

It’s no surprise, however, that McDonald’s is doubling down on its chicken offerings. Since the launch of the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich in 2019 and its subsequent success, McDonald’s has offered a spicy barbecue chicken sandwich before testing out the crispy chicken sandwich that will be released soon.
