McEnany’s husband attends White House press conference without a mask

Mills confirmed to Johnson that Gilmartin did not have a mask throughout the briefing, adding that he did not know Gilmartin was McEnany’s husband when he informed him of the mask rules.

McEnany did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment on why her husband refused to wear a mask during Wednesday’s briefing. White House Correspondents Association chairman Zeke Miller, an Associated Press reporter, also did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the exchange.

Mills, a veteran White House photojournalist, is one of President Donald Trump’s favorite media outlets. Trump previously called him a “genius” and “the world’s No.1 photographer.”

Chad Gilmartin, deputy White House press secretary, cousin of Sean Gilmartin, was also present at McEnany’s briefing. He wasn’t wearing a mask either.

McEnany, who tested positive for Covid-19 in October, refused to wear a mask while briefing reporters throughout the coronavirus pandemic, citing the distance between her and the press when she stood on the podium of the briefing room. She was one of many administration officials to have been infected in three separate outbreaks in the White House in recent months.

At the start of his briefing on Wednesday, McEnany showed video clips of Democratic politicians violating local coronavirus restrictions or contradicting their own public health guidelines – depicting the footage of “footage of Democratic hypocrisy playing on repeat.”

“These images behind me clearly show the mindset of Democrats: rules for you but not for me,” McEnany said.

“We all know how to protect ourselves from Covid-19,” she added. “Wash your hands, social distancing, wear a mask.”
